Lunar New Year KAL 2023

January 22 - March 19

Welcome to a new year, and another fun KAL, complete with in-person meetings - details below!!

Hi all, Tracy here! (owner at Handknit). My inspiration for this KAL is a personal one. This winter's KAL start date happens to fall on the first day of the Lunar New Year, and as a person of Asian heritage, I'd really love to celebrate Asian knitwear designers - there are so many good ones - and I'd love for you to join me by knitting (or crocheting) a garment or shawl by an Asian knitwear designer.

We've created a Ravelry bundle featuring some well known Asian designers, and each one has an impressive portfolio of designs. Please check out each designer's patterns, we just know you'll find a project that's right for you. Please keep in mind the definition of 'Asian' is inclusive and broad, and applies to people who come from, or whose ancestors come from, a wide range of countries- from China and Japan, to as far west as India, Iran and Saudi Arabia, so we are sure you will have a lot of patterns to choose from. That being said, our list is by no means a comprehensive list, so if you know of an amazing Asian designer, please let us know and we'll add to our list! You can of course choose your own pattern, even a shawl if you prefer, as long as it's a minimum of 800yards.

*Please read through your pattern carefully before casting on. You should be able to understand your pattern and be able to do the skills required on your own. If you need help with your pattern you can book a private lesson (Saturdays) for $30 per half hour.

Here's our Top Picks to cast on

Kinsan by Kiyomi and Sachiko Burgin
 Brette by Rastus Tsu
UraUe DK by Natsuko Iida
Drawing Sweater by Tomomi Yoshimoto
The Twigs by Junko Okamoto
KAL REQUIREMENTS
You must purchase your yarn for the knit-along after January 1st 2023, or during the knit-along until the deadline date, in order to qualify for the prize draw. You must purchase a minimum of 800 yards for your project. If your project does not meet the required yardage, you can still join, but you won’t be able to enter the draw. If you finish your project by the deadline date, your name will enter a draw to win a $60 Handknit Yarn Studio Gift Card! (one entry per qualifying finished project)

If you need some inspiration, take a look at our Ravelry Bundle!

HOW TO JOIN
To join our Fall KAL you'll start by choosing a suitable pattern, purchasing your yarn at Handknit Yarn Studio and letting us know you'd like to participate. You can do this via  email, phone, Instagram DM or Facebook Message. Once we hear from you we'll add your name to our official KAL list. On (or before) the final KAL date, March 19th, we ask you to submit proof of your finished project to Handknit Yarn Studio by midnight in order to qualify for the draw.
You can submit your project to us by email, Instagram DM or Facebook Message. If you've been sharing on our Ravelry Forum, please make sure to submit your project  email, Instagram DM or Facebook Message as well.
MEETING SCHEDULE
Meetings will be held every second Sunday morning 10:30am - 12:30pm for the duration of the knitalong, with a maximum of 12 people per meeting. If we find there are more people joining the meetings than we can seat, we will open meetings on a reservation basis.
